Sheri Alter practices primarily in the areas of complex
commercial and employment litigation. Her practice includes
contract disputes, business torts, and insurance coverage
issues. She handles disputes among partners, shareholders, and
officers, including dissolutions, accountings of corporate
affairs, shareholder's derivative suits, and claims for breach
of fiduciary duty. Ms. Alter also handles contested estate and
probate matters, construction disputes and defamation cases.
Ms. Alter has extensive experience handling all aspects of equal
employment opportunity litigation in federal and state court,
including claims of race, sex, pregnancy, age, national origin,
and disability discrimination, the investigation and defense of
sexual harassment claims, as well as claims of unlawful
retaliation and wrongful termination. She drafts, updates and
reviews employee manuals and covenants not to compete, and
provides advice regarding employment contracts, severance
agreements, hiring decisions, anti-harassment training and other
personnel related issues.
Ms. Alter also has significant experience representing
property owners in the defense of accessibility claims arising
under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (the
"ADA"). In these cases, Ms. Alter helps to ensure the applicable
regulations are applied properly and do not impose an undue
burden or hardship on her clients.
Ms. Alter has lived in South Florida since 1977. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Miami in 1992, and received her Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law in 1996. She has practiced law in South Florida since her admission to the Bar in 1996.
